…. is this a joke.
I feel like this is from a zombie movie
Alright you pieces of shit. Laughing at the south because of our reaction to snow is such an asshole thing to do. We are not prepared for snow, sleet, and ice here. We do not have chains for our tires, we do not learn how to drive in icy conditions. We are two completely different climates, and we are prepared for different situations. People here are DYING because of the severe threat that temperatures in the thirties present to us. Interstates are closing down either because they have too much ice or too many accidents. This isn’t us overreacting. This is us being safe and protecting people. So shut the fuck up.
^^^^^ SO MUCH
okay, look. I grew up in Michigan. I get it. This snow looks like weak shit. We seem like total wimps and morons for being stuck inside and scared to leave our houses, but the thing is, our roads are literally designed the worst way possible for snow and ice. In the south most roads run through hills and valleys. The roads are designed to run water off the sides of the road.
What happens when a road that is designed high in the middle and low on both sides freezes? They become nearly impossible to drive on. Couple that with the inexperience of most southern drivers, and this weather is ACTUALLY DEADLY. People stock up on food and supplies because leaving their house is dangerous. Yesterday my professor was stuck at Target for several hours with a sick baby because roads were completely impassable.
It isn’t about skill or ability. It is science and nature. Roads in the north are flat and grooved for snow and ice, allowing cars to find more traction. It is easier to drive in winter there because of pre planning, equipment, and, yes, experience.
I get it. you’re super bad ass because there’s snow on your yard 5 out of 12 months of the year, but your roads are safer, your cities are equipped, and your neighbors are used to the conditions.
tldr; southerner’s aren’t wimps. roads down here suck, and these conditions are an actual, real threat, so STOP MAKING FUN OF PEOPLE IN THE SOUTH.
To add my experience:
Literally on Tuesday, which was when the snow hit, I still went to school in Cobb County. You’ve probably seen it on the national news: Cobb and Fulton were the only two school systems to keep their schools open. Because they’re idiots.
Long story short we left school early, but it was too late. I was stuck on a bus for four hours. AND THEN THE BUS BROKE DOWN. On the bright side, we were next to a Publix, but the Publix was closed because of the weather. Me and 13 OTHER HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO DIDN’T KNOW HOW TO HANDLE THIS KIND OF WEATHER WERE STUCK IN A BUS WITHOUT HEAT. We ended up staying in a Chinese restaurant for four more hours.
Eventually, my friend’s mom arrived to take me and five other students (including her daughter) home along the backroads, because the maine road, East-West Connector, which is one of our main roads in Cobb County was closed down due to ice on the bridges. She only made it to us because she had a Range Rover that seated five. There were seven of us. For two more hours I was in the trunk of a Range Rover trying to get home.
And that’s not even the worst, because I GOT home. There were middle schoolers at Griffen Middle stuck there until MIDNIGHT. There were more students, ELEMENTARY SCHOOL students, that were trapped in their schools OVERNIGHT. FIVE OTHER STUDENTS THAT RODE MY BUS WITH ME WERE LEFT ON THE BUS. I’M NOT SURE HOW MANY OF THEM HAD TO STAY IN THE BUS OVERNIGHT (they said that they had rides), BUT I KNOW THAT THE BUSDRIVER DID.
DON’T SAY THAT WE’RE WIMPS BECAUSE OF THIS. THERE ARE PEOPLE THAT HAVE BEEN WITHOUT SHELTER OR WARMTH FOR THE PAST THREE DAYS BECAUSE OUR ROADS ARE CRAP, AND THERE ARE STUDENTS THAT ARE POTENTIALLY IN DANGER BECAUSE OUR SCHOOL SYSTEM MADE A CRAPPY MISTAKE.
You can bet that we won’t have school for a while (tomorrow will be our third snow day, which may be added onto our summer vacation), because serious heat is gonna be coming down on the school board about why there are students still trapped in schools.
I love winter; it’s my favorite, and I love the snow. I wasn’t too bothered by the cold, and I was willing to push through. But overall, there are others who are in danger because we as a state are not used to this.
